ISABELLA ESPINOSA’S VISION FOR BAOBAB IS INSPIRED BY THE SUSTAINABILITY REVOLUTION
“BAOBAB started as an idea, a story to tell, and eventually a product to sell. I wanted to build something that answered a simple question: How can we make a difference?” Isabella says of building the brand.
This year, BAOBAB made its debut at PARAISO Miami Swim Week and hosted its first Miami pop-up in the Design District. The excitement surrounding the event was palpable, especially as it marked the first collaboration with their team and a talented founder, Isabella Espinosa.
Isabella’s life story transitioning from law student to fashion pioneer wasn’t purely coincidental, though it wasn’t predestined either. “Law school instilled in me an awareness of a need to disrupt established norms,” she reflects. This legal training provided an unexpected yet solid foundation for her fashion career. Her journey into fashion was shaped by critical thinking and a determination to challenge conventions, laying the groundwork for BAOBAB’s innovative approach to sustainability.
BAOBAB emerged from Isabella’s desire to answer a fundamental question: “How can we make a difference?” From its inception, the brand has been driven by a commitment to zero-waste principles. “Waste is not waste if we cascade,” she explains, referring to the brand’s Cascade Challenge. Launched in 2022, this initiative repurposes dead-stock textiles into valuable resources for designers and artists, transforming fashion waste into innovative creations.
Sustainability is woven into every aspect of BAOBAB. “Cascade is the name of our sustainability mission,” Isabella says. This ethos is evident in BAOBAB’s zero-waste production process, where excess materials are collected in the Textile Scraps Bank for future use, ensuring minimal environmental impact. In 2023, BAOBAB recycled three tons of waste through its Cascade program, further reinforcing its commitment to sustainability.
Balancing her roles as CEO and Creative Director, Isabella drives BAOBAB’s operations and vision. “My main focus is to ensure BAOBAB is always part of what’s coming and shaping what’s next,” she states. Managing a team of 68 while developing future collections, Isabella’s role is multifaceted. “I conceptualize new activations and craft compelling narratives for our collections,” she adds, keeping the brand at the forefront of fashion innovation.
Under Isabella’s leadership, BAOBAB has achieved significant milestones, establishing a global presence in over 50 countries and 450 boutiques. The brand can be found in major luxury department stores such as Saks, Bloomingdale’s, and Shopbop. Looking ahead, Isabella remains focused on the future: “We aim to continue pushing boundaries and setting new standards,” she says.
Isabella’s advice to aspiring leaders is both insightful and empowering: “Faith isn’t blind, it’s visionary. If you believe in what you do and have passion for your beliefs, no obstacle is too great.”
